It seems that Hollywood — especially Netflix — has taken quite a shine to the look of mosaic art. When not using Mozaico pieces in their series — watch for our pieces in “Ozark” and “Orange is the New Black” — they’re using mosaics for their new campus.
Their new site-specific piece, “SPECTRUM,” is located on Netflix’s Hollywood campus. The piece, a mosaic made up of 39,000 stainless steel sequins, reflects light in a way that has the look of a woman’s face on a giant video screen.
We can’t be the only ones who are always tuned into mosaic art! So, tell us if you’ve spotted beautiful mosaic art pieces in some of your favorite TV shows and movies!
Mosaic art fans know — once you’ve fallen in love with mosaic, you’ll see it everywhere! Our favorite type of art shows up frequently on TV sets and in movies. From cartoons to mosaic wall artwork about Hollywood subjects, you’re likely to spot mosaic pieces on and off the screen. After some Mozaico designs made it onto the sets of “Ozark” and “Orange Is the New Black”, we investigated how mosaic is the perfect co-star.
Since the holidays are the perfect time to snuggle in for some TV binge watching, we spotted some great mosaic design inspo in a wide variety of settings.
Orange is the New Black
Meanwhile, “Bridgerton” gives us a serious craving for ornate Regency-era looks. Layers, patterns, and attention to every surface create a strong aesthetic. Although the steamy encounters, intrigue, and lucious costumes are compelling, we can’t stop thinking about how to add the look of its mosaic rugs and fireplace screens to our own homes.
It seems that Hollywood — especially Netflix — has taken quite a shine to the look of mosaic art. When not using Mozaico pieces in their series — watch for our pieces in “Ozark” and “Orange is the New Black” — they’re using mosaics for their new campus.
Locke and Key
If your family has succumbed to the mysterious world of “Locke and Key” on Netflix, you may have noticed the gorgeous mosaic floors of the Keyhouse Mansion. As a matter of fact, they’re mentioned in the first episode, when matriarch Nina Locke is introduced to her magical new home.
As the family first steps inside the house, Nina exclaims, “These floors are original!”
Her late husband’s brother Duncan, who is giving them the tour, says, “Oh, it’s all original.”
Actually, the whole house was created on a movie lot, but we love their flooring choices!
Grace and Frankie
“Grace and Frankie” features a lot of complicated relationships, big laughs, and — some amazing house interiors. Robert and Sol’s Spanish Colonial-style home is welcoming and airy, with plenty of terra cotta tiles and natural woods.
Is it any wonder that mosaic tile was the perfect choice for framing their fireplace? In the real world, durable mosaic is perfect for fireplaces. It’s also easy to fit to odd shapes, such as the arched opening in their living room.
My Fair Lady
My Fair Lady is a fun movie to watch with the family — who doesn’t love Audrey Hepburn? Our recent sofa and popcorn session with this classic found us distracted by Eliza Doolittle’s new accommodations in Henry Higgins’ luxurious home. Although Eliza was enchanted by the modern amenities of her bathroom, we became distracted by the gorgeous mosaic tile touches in the background.
Bojack Horseman
Even the cartoon universe isn’t immune to the charms of mosaic wall art. Bojack Horseman, another Netflix series, features a washed-up, half-horse, half-human former TV star — and a lot of clever adaptations of famous art pieces. Picasso, Hockney, and Matisse are nice — but let’s talk about the mosaic, okay?
In S3E05, we spy an homage to ancient Roman mosaic art, featuring a horse medallion on the Bojack’s bathroom wall. For a struggling Hollywood star, he certainly has fantastic taste!
Harry Potter
The Harry Potter movies are often cited as modern masterpieces of movie set art. We were more than happy to sit down, plop our hot chocolate mugs down on our tabletop, and get to work spotting its mosaic masterpieces. There are plenty to enjoy, from doorway surrounds to ornate mosaic floors. However, we fell in love with the outrageous pink and gold office of Dolores Umbridge! Visit for the magical moving kittens of her plate collection — but stay to enjoy the fantastic mosaic embellishments.
Grand Budapest Hotel
Director Wes Anderson is known for his fanatical attention to detail on his movie sets. “Grand Budapest Hotel”, set in the fictional country of Zubrowka. Although the set was largely built to specifications, some scenes were set in real-life locations.
If you were more interested in the background of Mendl’s confectionery shop, we don’t blame you! It was filmed in Pfunds Molkerei, a famous 19th Century creamery in Dresden. Plenty of blues, golds, and cherubs fill the interior.
Jodha Akbar
Hurray for Bollywood! Known for its over-the-top productions, it’s also ready to pour on the bling for its movie sets. As we sampled some movies from this genre, we learned that it’s an industry that loves using mosaic art to set the mood.
A notable example is the period piece Jodha Akbar. The blockbuster is known for not only being historically accurate, but extremely opulent — especially the palaces. The set designed by Nitin Chandrakant Desai has been opened to tourists. It’s arguably one of the most spectacular films India has made. The interior shots, with incredible mosaic floors, ceilings, and walls, are total eye candy for mosaic art fans.
The Great
Fan favorite “The Great” on Hulu is a real treat for interior design and Russian history buffs. Although the plot may take some liberties, the sets are on point, featuring all the luxuries you’d expect. As Catherine the Great plots her rise in Russia way back in the old days, she’s surrounded by tons of mosaic work, especially on the marble mosaic floors. We’d like to recognize her great taste.
Bridgerton
Their new site-specific piece, “SPECTRUM,” is located on Netflix’s Hollywood campus. The piece, a mosaic made up of 39,000 stainless steel sequins, reflects light in a way that has the look of a woman’s face on a giant video screen.
